Conjugate-Inspired Strength

A practical overview of rotating related lift variations, strength practice, and assistance work—with control kept ahead of load.

The example below is proposed general education. It is not a complete or officially approved CVSC program, individualized programming, or a verified CVSC standard.

The basic ideas

Vary the work. Keep the standard.

Conjugate-inspired training can rotate related lift variations, distinguish heavy strength work from lighter speed-focused practice, and build repeated effort through assistance movements. Those ideas can be arranged in many ways; this short guide does not prescribe a complete program or weekly schedule.

  • Rotate related variations: practice a familiar movement pattern through suitable variations over time.
  • Separate training qualities: heavy strength practice and lighter speed-focused practice have different demands.
  • Build repeated effort: use manageable assistance work to practice more controlled repetitions.

Proposed general example

A controlled session.

Starting point / 01

  1. Warm up easily

Start with a few minutes of easy movement and rehearse the patterns you plan to use. Keep the warm-up comfortable.

  2. Pair two familiar patterns

Choose one squat or hinge pattern and pair it with one push or pull. For each, complete about two or three controlled sets of five to eight repetitions, leaving several good repetitions in reserve.

  3. Add light assistance

If you feel good and can keep control, finish with one or two light assistance movements for eight to twelve repetitions each.

  4. Record and progress carefully

Log the variation and how the effort felt. Progress only while your control and technique remain sound.

Choose the right setting

Heavy work needs experience.

Heavy or speed-focused work requires appropriate experience, equipment, and coaching. Avoid one-rep-max testing, percentage prescriptions, and explosive work as an unsupervised default. Keep this example easy to scale and ask a qualified coach about unfamiliar lifts.
